Volkswagen Australia introduces updates to the MY27 ID.4 SUV.

Volkswagen Australia has introduced updates to the MY27 ID. 4 SUV, featuring enhancements in infotainment, driver-assistance systems, and customization options for both Pro and GTX models. These improvements result in a price increase of $1000, bringing the new prices to $60,990 and $70,990, respectively, excluding on-road costs.

At the heart of these updates is Volkswagen’s Innovision infotainment system, showcased on a 12.9-inch touchscreen with built-in satellite navigation. This upgrade is accompanied by the return of physical controls on the steering wheel, replacing the touch-sensitive panels that had drawn criticism from buyers.

Updated Features

The ID. 4 also introduces an improved version of Volkswagen’s ID. Light system, utilizing a slim LED strip at the bottom of the windshield to provide visual cues, including animated turn signals. Additionally, a new Driving Experience Selection with Atmospheres allows passengers to tailor the cabin ambiance by adjusting various comfort and convenience settings in unison.

For MY27, the battery capacity of the ID. 4 Pro has been increased to 84kWh from the previous 82kWh, slightly extending its range from 544km to 546km. The ID. 4 GTX maintains its 82kWh battery, and both models support DC fast charging up to 175kW.

Safety and Driver-Assistance Technology

Safety and driver-assistance features have been expanded with the inclusion of Traffic Sign Recognition, Front Cross Traffic Assist, Proactive Occupant Protection System, Predictive Speed Limiter, and an Enhanced Area View camera system. The Predictive Speed Limiter collaborates with adaptive cruise control and Traffic Sign Recognition to automatically adjust the vehicle’s speed according to changing speed limits.

Piergiorgio Minto, Volkswagen Australia’s brand director of passenger vehicles, stated that these updates aim to enhance the ID. 4’s appeal in the local market. “The MY27 updates introduce a meaningful range of enhancements across technology, safety and personalisation, further strengthening the appeal of the ID. 4 range for Australian customers,” he said.

Market Performance and Future Plans

The updated ID. 4 models are now available in Volkswagen showrooms across Australia. However, sales of the initial version have been relatively low, with just over 1300 registrations by the end of September this year. This pales in comparison to the Tesla Model Y, which leads the segment with 35,930 sales during the same period.

The MY27 updates precede Volkswagen’s plan to phase out the ID. 4 name, replacing it with the new ID. Tiguan, which will also succeed the coupe-styled ID. 5 globally. The ID. Tiguan will complement the existing combustion/hybrid Tiguan as its electric counterpart, marking Volkswagen’s transition from numerical ID naming to more familiar model designations.

Thomas Schäfer, Volkswagen brand CEO, highlighted the Tiguan’s strong global sales history, with over 8.3 million units produced, as a foundation for the new model. The ID. Tiguan is expected to be based on an evolved version of Volkswagen’s MEB electric platform and will offer more affordable LFP battery options alongside higher-capacity NMC packs.

As the ID. Tiguan prepares for its debut on October 9 and international launch in early 2027, Volkswagen has confirmed the new model will replace the ID. 4 and ID. 5. The ID. Tiguan will sit alongside the existing Tiguan, continuing Volkswagen’s shift away from the numerical ID naming convention and toward familiar model names.

This transition occurs despite the ID. 4 and ID. 5 achieving strong international sales, with over 950,000 units delivered worldwide since 2021, making them among Volkswagen Group’s most successful EV models. The ID. Tiguan is expected to offer a single-motor, rear-drive NMC variant with a targeted range of 600km WLTP. At its local launch, the ID. 4 Pro was priced from $60,990 plus on-road costs, and was positioned as the cornerstone of Volkswagen’s local ID lineup.
