Bentley Motors has appointed T.Jon Mayer as its new head of exterior design and design operations, following the departure of Domen Rucigaj to a new role in parent company Volkswagen Group. Mayer will lead the company’s exterior design team and oversee the transition towards electrification, starting with the Bentley Torcal.
New Leadership
Mayer will also continue as head of UX design and design operations, a role he took on when joining Bentley in 2024. He helped advance the integration of digital experience, craftsmanship, and design innovation across the business.
With over 20 years of international automotive design experience, Mayer previously held senior leadership positions at Volvo Cars, including head of exterior design and head of design, Volvo Cars USA.
Design Experience
At Volvo, Mayer led the exterior design of vehicles including the EX60, EX30, S60, V60, and V60 Cross Country. He also helped shape Volvo’s modern design language through the Concept Coupe family and contributed to one of the brand’s most recognizable design signatures, the Thor’s Hammer headlight.
Mayer graduated from Carnegie Mellon University before continuing his studies at the ArtCenter College of Design in Pasadena, California.
Reporting to Bentley’s director of design, Robin Page, Mayer will lead a multi-skilled 45-strong team.

Future of Bentley Design
“Bentley represents one of the most compelling luxury brands in the world, with an extraordinary heritage and an exciting future ahead,” said Mayer in a statement. “I’m honored to lead the exterior design team at such a moment for the company and look forward to helping shape the next chapter of Bentley design.”
As the automotive industry shifts towards electrification, Mayer’s experience and leadership will be key in shaping the future of Bentley’s design. The company’s transition towards electrification is expected to be a significant challenge, but also an opportunity for innovation and growth.
In the middle of this transition, it’s worth considering how other luxury brands have handled similar challenges in the past. For example, the successful integration of electric vehicles into a brand’s lineup can be a major factor in its long-term success.
Mayer’s team will be responsible for designing the next generation of luxury vehicles, including the Bentley Torcal. The Torcal is expected to be a key model for the company, and its design will be closely watched by industry observers and customers alike.
The Bentley brand has a long history of producing high-quality, luxurious vehicles, and the company’s commitment to electrification is seen as a major step forward in its evolution.
